Summer Fun

The museum offers half-day and full-day week-long summer programs exploring nature and space for preschoolers and elementary school students. Each child is involved for one week in either a morning or afternoon session. Class size is limited to 10 - 12 children, so sign up today! A minimum enrollment is established for each class and must be met at least five days prior to the first class meeting.

You may cancel up to one week before class, unless otherwise stated, and receive a refund less a $10.00 handling fee. After that time, no refunds can be made. If the Virginia Living Museum cancels the program, a full refund will be issued.

Non-members may register beginning Jan. 30, 2008.

Wild Adventures in Nature and Space

Join us for a fun-filled week of hands-on science activities. These five-day programs are filled with crafts, touchable, live animals, visits through the Museum (including our the Swamp and Mountain habitats and the Children’s Learning Garden), and many hands-on learning adventures.

Times:

Morning Session: 9:30 a.m. - Noon or Afternoon Session:1:30 – 4 p.m.

Cost: $89/child; $115/non-member

Children must be four years old by the first class meeting.

The Littlest Naturalists Explore: Places Where Animals Live and Play

Learn about butterflies in the garden and crabs at the beach. We'll see what it's like to crawl underground like an ant and howl like a wolf in the woods.

The Littlest Naturalists Explore: Stories About Nature

Let's begin with a book .. as we explore our natural world. From classic authors to new favorites, children's literature will be the springboard for hands-on investigation and creative fun. Each day's discoveries will focus on the featured creatures, habitats and themes of a different book.

Having completed Kindergarten

Nature Explorers Take a Look at Animal Champions

Who’s the biggest? Who’s the best? Speed, strength, size – by comparing a variety of traits, we’ll see how animals measure up in their own Olympics.

Nature Explorers Take a Look at Happy Habitats

Explore the habitats of the world right here at the museum! Deserts, oceans, rainforests and more – discover some of the plants and animals that call them home.

Dates:  July 21-25, Aug. 4-8 (AM only), Aug. 11-15

Junior Rocketeers!

Calling all space cadets! We're going to learn all about how rockets work and how other aircraft fly, and see what people learned from nature in order to get off the ground. Plus, at the end of the week, each rocketeer gets to build and launch a rocket! (Parents please note: Due to the dangers involved, we do not use standard model rocket kits with young children.)

Nature Detectives Explore Nature's Secrets

What secrets of nature can we discover in a drop of pond water? In a spider's web? Inside a flower? Join us as we investigate the hidden ways of nature around us.

Nature Detectives Discover Earth's Wonders

What on earth is beneath our feet? Come learn about the secrets of soil, the stories of rocks, the ancient ways of the dinosaurs, and the hidden world of caves as we explore the science of the earth this week.

Dates:  July 7-11, July 14-18 (AM only), July 28-Aug. 1

Light Questions

Why is the sky blue? Why does the Sun look red sometimes? Why do we see different colors? These and other famous light-related questions will be answered in this exciting class! If your kids has got a case of the 'whys' ... we've got the cure!

Having Completed Grades 2 or 3

Nature Investigators: More than Dinosaurs!

What did the world look like when Allosaurus was alive? Come explore ancient environments by investigating geologic puzzles and fossil evidence of dinosaurs as well as other prehistoric critters. Learn how paleontologists collect, preserve and study evidence of the prehistoric past. We'll also visit DINO-MANIA! in our Changing Exhibits Gallery this week.

Having Completed Grades 4 or 5

Space Explorers

Space is big - really big! Exploring it just might take while. Eager space explorers will discover how big the universe is and how that will affect where we go and what we find. Then we'll look at facts and fiction about rocket travel and alien life. Robots, working in space and basic rocketry will round out the week. How far do you want to go?

Global Tails

Day-long program.

For children having completed Grades 2 and 3

Global Tails: creatures of myth and fable

A global adventure of mythic proportions! Travel around the world with us as we explore land, sea and sky to discover creatures beyond your imagination. We'll seek aboriginal Australian legends ...search for the medieval unicorn...marvel at Chinese dragons...discover the wonder of Native American skylore...and so much more!

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $220/member

Junior Naturalists

Day-long program
for children having Completed Grades 4 or 5

TRAVEL with us to search a pristine beach and shore for living critters, collect fossils from the homes of ancient animals, explore the world of fresh water animals, capture insects, and experience close-up meetings of our live, touchable animals.

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Summer Field Adventures

Having completed grades 6 or 7

The museum's Summer Field Adventure programs are designed to get middle school students excited about Virginia's natural history. Our aim is to provide programs that will be fun and challenging experiences that will keep children talking all summer long.

Appalachian Mountain Adventure         

Along with two museum biologists, our explorers will get to know the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains from above and below. We'll hike parts of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the world-famous Appalachian Trail looking for and learning about the wildlife that lives there. We'll discover the secrets of cold mountain streams and waterfalls. We'll head underground to discover what lurks beneath the mountains and find out what makes a troglophile so special. And to top it all off, we'll bunk down in tents and enjoy our meals by the campfire. If you like adventure and aren't afraid of the dark, you'll love this trip.

All food, transportation, camping and scientific equipment are provided.
