Discover the "heart" of the
Virginia Living Museum

Have you ever been to a zoo or an aquarium and wondered who looks after these animals? How they are fed, cleaned and kept in an environment as close to nature as possible? Well, now you can discover the secrets with a behind the scenes look at the Virginia Living Museum.

In our behind the scenes tour, you will discover the answers to some of the following:

How do we acquire the animals and fish for our displays?
How do we feed so many different species with very particular diets?
How do we get the water in the aquariums to match the oceans and the rivers; and how do we keep it clean?
What happens when the animals and fish get sick or injured?
What happens in quarantine?
What does a herpetologist do?
What does an aquarist do?
Do our animals and fish breed in captivity?
What does it take to light up all the different exhibits, especially the nocturnal ones?
What happens to the animals after hours?

Have an up close and personal show of trout feeding. See where the coyotes sleep at night. Watch food being prepared by our team of volunteers. All this and more when you visit behind the scenes at the Virginia Living Museum!
