April 21-22 Earth Days Celebration
The Virginia Living Museum celebrates Earth Day with a weekend of special activities for our animals. Watch the animals receive toys, treats and other enrichment activities to stimulate natural behaviors. See the red wolves and coyotes devour ice treats, watch the raccoon search a basket full of newspapers, all part of a stimulation process that usually occurs behind-the-scenes. A new Animal Playground will open on the outside boardwalk. The Virginia Garden, a permanent garden that explores 400 years of Virginia's botanical history, will have its official opening.
June 23 -24 Summer Survivor Showdown
It's a summer adventure weekend at the Virginia Living Museum. Can you survive on land and water? Special adventure activities, including a climbing wall. Additional fee for some activities.
Aug. 4-5 Pioneer Skills and Wilderness Weekend
Surviving in the Virginia Wilderness required special skills. Long before the days of modern technology, Virginia pioneers learned to use the natural materials all around them for food, clothing, shelter and medicine. Throughout the weekend at the Virginia Living Museum, interactive demonstrations will feature a variety of the skills pioneers needed to 'rough it' in the wilderness. Find out how and why Virginia pioneers may have introduced ponies to Chincoteague. Enjoy live animal programs that showcase creatures from Virginia's wild forests and fields. Kids can take a pony ride and try their hand at pioneer crafts. Additional fee for some activities.
Nov. 10-11 Military Appreciation Weekend
The Virginia Living Museum salutes all members of the military. $5 off admission for active and retired military members and their families, with ID.
Nov. 17-18 Native American Traditions
Celebrate the cultural heritage of Virginia's Native American people at the Virginia Living Museum. Enjoy storytelling, crafts, music, cultural exhibits, and live animal programs featuring native animals from traditional stories. In the Virginia Garden, discover the many ways that native plants were used by Virginia's original settlers. Kids will enjoy playing games that Indian children once played, and can make a craft to take home.
The museum is located at 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, Va. (I64, exit 258A).
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
