Horticulture Technician

Part-time permanent position – 20-30 hours per week

The Virginia Living Museum, a regional nature center, wildlife park and botanical garden in Newport News, is seeking an individual with horticulture or biology knowledge or experience to join our horticulture staff.

General Statement of Duties
Under the supervision of the Assistant Horticulture Curator, the Horticulture Technician helps to maintain the museum grounds, display gardens, indoor and outdoor exhibit areas, greenhouses and nursery. Duties may include the use of power equipment. This is a year-round part-time position without benefits.

Qualifications

  • Some experience in landscaping, horticulture or grounds maintenance.
  • College student or graduate pursuing a career in horticulture preferred.
  • Ability to do heavy physical work (lift 50 lbs) and to work outdoors in inclement weather at times.
  • Experience in the safe use and maintenance of power equipment and tools a plus.
  • Knowledge of or interest in native Virginia plants and wildlife a plus.

Hours are flexible and can be worked around student class schedules, but applicant must be able to work at least some early mornings. Some weekend work may be required.
