Facilities Maintenance

 

Purpose: To maintain the Virginia Living Museum’s buildings, grounds, boardwalks and exhibits meet all safety standards. To present the facility, grounds and exhibits in a pleasing, safe and functional manner as to enhance the visitor experience.

Duties: 

Assist staff with:

  • Maintain both Museum facilities lighting systems (both indoors and out) insuring all lighting is functioning as designed. This may include changing light bulbs and/or ballasts.
  • Maintenance of outdoor boardwalk to include replacing warped boards and re-fastening of loose boards; addition of graphics and/or signage.
  • Install and ship out changing gallery exhibits.
  • Maintain all metal handrails on Museum property.
  • Assist in preparing the museum for adverse weather conditions.


Qualifications:

  • All Virginia Living Museum volunteers must work a minimum of 1 shift per month.
  • Ability to report on time when scheduled. If you are not able to attend, it is required that you inform Volunteer Services so that a substitute can be found if necessary.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age, with some maintenance experience.
  • Basic knowledge of safe work practices; Basic knowledge of hand tools and tools related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to work from ladders and boats.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  •  Physical ability to work outside in the elements year round; Physical ability to bend, climb, kneel, reach, stoop preferred. Physical ability to carry, lift, pull / push weighted objects preferred.
  • Must be comfortable working in close proximity with animals including birds, coyotes, mice, toads, snakes.
  •  Willing to work in old clothes and shoes that will become dirty &/or wet.

Special Instructions:

  • At the beginning of a Facilities shift, after signing in, report to the Facilities office.

Training:

  • New Volunteer Orientation
  • On-the-job training includes all of the above.

Supervisor:

  • Direct supervisors: Facilities Director and Lead Volunteer
  • Also reports to Volunteer Services Staff
