From the Mountains to the Bay

the Virginia Living Museum can deliver.

Spend your afternoon with the Virginia Living Museum and:

  • Explore the fascinating regions and habitats of Virginia.  
  • Meet live native wildlife.
  • Taste some of our favorite regional foods.
  • Enjoy learning in a friendly, casual atmosphere.


Choose one or more programs.
Each program begins with a delicious themed lunch that showcases products from Virginia’s regions.

Mountains and Piedmont
Spend an afternoon enjoying a fascinating hands-on look at Virginia’s geology. Hold and examine rocks and real fossils that are millions of years old. Meet and greet some live animals that call the mountains their home. We’ll top off the afternoon by learning about and tasting a variety of wines and cheeses from Virginia’s Piedmont region. (Non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.)

Virginia’s Coastal Plain
Discover the fascinating lifestyles of animals that take to Virginia’s skies and migrate through the coastal plain. Meet live native birds and get a close-up look at their unique adaptations. We’ll also introduce a sampling of native Coastal Plain plants and talk about their importance to historic and present day Virginians.

blue crabThe Chesapeake Bay
Spend the afternoon discovering the Chesapeake Bay from the comfort of the Museum. In our planetarium, marvel at clear “night” skies and discover how sea captains used the stars to guide their voyages. We’ll also explore life under the bay by taking a close-up look at the survival strategies of aquatic animals like blue crabs, oysters and flounder.

Cost: $45 per person, per day
Fee includes all activity materials, lunch and the instruction of our professional Museum Science Educators.

Time: Noon to 4 p.m.

How many people are in a course?
Our classes are limited to 25 people to create a more personal and relaxed atmosphere.
Minimum of 10 participants per organization.
