Celebrate National Public Lands Day- Sept. 25

Volunteers Sought for Biological survey of Fort Monroe - VLM Partners with Audubon Society

NOTE:  All volunteer slots currently filled

The Virginia Living Museum and the National Audubon Society are seeking volunteers to participate in a biologi
Audubon society Logocal diversity study at Fort Monroe on Sept. 25, one of more than 30 TogetherGreen volunteer
events taking place to celebrate National Public Lands Day.

Volunteers will be split into teams (led by naturalist experts) to survey the birds, plants, aquatic habitats and insects in specific areas within the base’s natural areas, prior to its decommissioning as a military base.

While most of Fort Monroe has been developed or impacted by the presence of humans, there are still remnants of natural area left on the northern portion of the base, inclusive of marsh, wetlands, small dunes and beach. Though disturbed, these natural areas allow us to better understand the ecosystems that would have once been vibrant on the property, and they are a part of the larger Chesapeake Bay watershed. The data collected will prove helpful to the future transition of this site into the hands of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Volunteers must preregister for the event with David Bryan at dbryan.audubon@gmail.com. Participants must be 18 years or older. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Virginia Living Museum, 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, and end at the museum at 3 p.m.

The biosurvey is sponsored by Audubon in partnership with the Virginia Living Museum and Toyota’s TogetherGreen.

BACKGROUND:
In only 18 months since launching TogetherGreen Volunteer Days, 13,918 volunteers have participated in volunteer events nationwide, contributing 66,276 hours of donated time.

For National Public Lands Day 2010, TogetherGreen volunteer events are being held at more than 30 participating Audubon sites in Virginia, New York, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Miami and numerous other cities.

TogetherGreen volunteer events are designed to connect people with ways to make a conservation difference in their local communities. By building stronger alliances with other local organizations, Audubon hopes to attract new and diverse volunteers to help address pressing environmental problems and opportunities.
