Adopt a Wild Thing in SchoolAdopt a Wild Thing... in School!

School Fundraising Initiative
March 2012

TowneBank

                                                                                             Sponsored by:

The 2011 VLM 'adoption' program for school children enabled 54 VLM animals to be adopted by classrooms across Hampton Roads.  The funds raised helped care for, feed and support the special habitats of our furry, fanged and feathered animals while teaching kids about natural habitats and environmental conservation.

Class or club animal 'adoptions' give children the satisfaction of knowing their gift will help the animals they love.  Classes may choose one of our program animals that travel and teach in school classrooms or an exhibit animal that teaches from its natural habitat right here at the Museum.

Classes also enjoy competing for:

  • a first place award
  • an opportunity for a special VLM Animal Program at school
  • the opportunity to choose the official animal mascot for next year's poster
  • the opportunity to enjoy a Celebration Event at the VLM

Join the 2012 “adoption” program!

Register by February 17, 2012 and incorporate this community-wide school service project into lesson plans.  Consider “adopting” an endangered species or the Virginia state saltwater fish (striped bass.)

On behalf of all the animals at the Virginia Living Museum, we extend our thanks for your generous support. “Connecting people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation” is our mission. Fun, hands-on science education is our heart. Your hands are needed.

The official fundraising month is March 1-30, but don’t wait until then, plan your project now!

Successful past ideas include:  doughnut sales prior to school opening as hungry kids arrive, loose change collected from family/friends, hold a car wash, challenge another classroom
