Celebrate Groundhog Day and Night at the Virginia Living Museum
Tradition says if the groundhog sees his shadow on Feb. 2, we’ll have six more weeks of winter. Help celebrate groundhogs and winter Thursday, Feb. 2 at Groundhog Day and Groundhog Night events at the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News.
Join WAVY-TV Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler and the VLM groundhog as they predict the weather during a live broadcast at noon on Groundhog Day. Guests are asked to gather at the musueum’s amphitheatre beginning at 11:30am for a live news broadcast on WAVY-TV 10. The ceremony is free to the public, and does not include admission to the museum. There may even be a visit from WAVY-TV's Chopper 10 and pilot John Massey (weather permitting).
Then the evening brings fun for the entire family in the main museum building from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Meet the groundhog and hear some interesting facts about groundhogs and winter.
Enjoy face-painting with Kolonial Klowns. Other children’s activities include crafts, build Stonehenge, shadow hand puppets, temporary tattoos and ‘groundhog chucking’ for a prize.
Explore the place of Earth in our solar system and its special relationship with the sun and moon in “Assignment Earth” showing in the Abbitt Planetarium at 7 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $2 plus evening admission.
The Wild Side Café will be open during the evening, serving special themed treats.
The museum is located at 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, I64, exit 258A.
Evening admission is $5 adults and $4 children (ages 3-12). Museum members are $4 adults, $2 children (ages 3-12). Children ages 2 and under are free.
