Homeschoolers invited Feb. 27 for special activities at the Virginia Living Museum Jan. 4, 2007
The Virginia Living Museum in Newport News will open its classroom doors to homeschoolers on Tuesday, Feb. 27 with a special line-up of its most requested natural history, earth and space science education programs.
The museum will also provide special activities, demonstrations, and a thought-provoking set of “Connection Questions” throughout its exhibit galleries and along the outdoor boardwalk trail.
Elementary age students can learn about animal survival, the concepts of photosynthesis, the earth’s structure, the motions of the sun and earth, weather and the changing seasons in 45-minute natural science and planetarium programs. Available will be Animal ABCs for kindergarten-grade 2, Web of Life for grades 2-4, Earth Under Foot for grades 3-5, The Sky Tonight for all grades, Day and Night for grades 1-2, Stacey Stormtracker for grades 2-3 and Reasons for the Seasons for grades 4-5.
Students in grades 5-9 can discover the amazing diversity of life in the Chesapeake Bay during a 90-minute environmental science lab.
The museum’s science education programs have been endorsed by the Virginia Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Science Foundation.
Natural science and planetarium programs are $8 per person and include a free visit to the museum. The environmental science lab is $10 per person and also includes a free visit to the museum. A self-guided museum visit only is $6 per person. Museum members receive a discount.

Virginia’s natural heritage comes alive at the Virginia Living Museum. The museum introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia through exhibits, discovery centers and interactive hands-on exhibits. The museum’s exhibits bring people in contact with more habitats, wildlife and plant species than would be encountered in a lifetime of outdoor adventures.

Winter hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
